Layers of Time, GreenlandThe scale of this iceberg is difficult to convey. What looks like a modest chunk of ice in the photograph was enormous, rising out of perfectly still water in the Ilulissat Icefjord. The left side is all sharp fractures and jagged edges where pieces had recently calved away. The right side tells a different story, rounded and smoothed by weeks or months of wind and melt water running across its surface. I was drawn to that contrast. Fresh violence on
