Iceberg Detail, GreenlandThe colour inside glacial ice is extraordinary. This deep, saturated blue comes from centuries of compression forcing out air bubbles until the ice absorbs every wavelength except blue. You can't replicate it. You can only get close enough to see it. I made this photograph in Greenland, working tight on a crack running through the surface of an iceberg. The overcast light was ideal for this kind of detail work. No harsh shadows, no blown highlights.
