He had become heavily involved in the fight for Greek independence against the Ottoman empire. He sold his English estate to help fund part of the war, and took command of the rebel army with no military experience. However before the battle, he became ill and eventually died of a high fever. He was hugely mourned in Greece and has been remembered as a hero to their cause.
